Concert Review-Bear Hands-Pittsburgh, PAWhat is it with bands from Brooklyn? Isn’t there anywhere else in the country with a music scene? Sometimes it seems as if there isn’t. Thanks to popular acts like TV On the Radio and MGMT among many others, Brooklyn has solidified itself as a hotbed of great music. One gets the feeling that by merely walking around the streets you’re likely to discover the next big thing. Maybe it will be a band like up-and-comers Bear In Heaven who recently played at Brillobox or maybe it will be Wednesday night’s headliner at the same venue Bear Hands, another young band hoping to follow in the footsteps of their neighbors.

In typical fashion, the show started off with a local band, on this occasion it was Ready Room who played to an almost empty room. They put on a solid show despite having just kicked put their long-time bassist and singer and playing with a substitute bassist. The new lead singer, Sean, didn’t seem entirely comfortable with his expanded role but managed just fine even while switching from guitar to keyboard mid-song. Bill, the other guitarist, did quite a bit of switching on his own between foot pedals and effect settings, which shows that these guys are pretty good musicians who will get by just fine without their former member.
Speaking of former members: I wish Aaron Jentzen was a former member of the next band…the one known as AaronConcert Review-Bear Hands-Pittsburgh, PA Jentzen. Mr. Jentzen and his two pals started off their set with a song featuring the lyrics “it never gets any better”, or something along those lines, I didn’t realize it at the time but he must have been talking about the set itself. To be honest it bothers me that I have to say this because I’m really seriously not a mean person but the best way I can describe this set is as follows: picture a boom box playing the song “wicked game” by Chris Isaak and then picture that boom box being flushed down a toilet filled with baby and/or kitten tears. It was that bad, the only wicked game being played was the one involving my will to live, which came out as loser. That is until the set ended.

There is comfort in knowing that no matter what the next band after Aaron Jentzen does, no matter how well or how poorly they play will be a drastic improvement over the previous set. A half-assed effort would have sufficed to make Bear Hands the clear winner of the battle of the bands going on in my head but they went above and beyond that level of effort and put on an all-around fantastic performance. This was the first official show of their tour, having only played a single release party the night before, but they played as if they had been on the road for weeks. With a mix of songs like the slide guitar heavy “Golden” from the EP of the same name and the new single “What a Drag” that can be found on the brand new 7’’ white vinyl (described by the band as being more special because white is rare like in situations with albino elephants and rhinos) Bear Hands showed they can sample from Concert Review-Bear Hands-Pittsburgh, PAdiverse genres of music without missing a beat. They are equally adept at using the aforementioned slide guitar for a bluesy sound or using pounding drums, bongos and ambient keys for a more trippy sound akin to the other Brooklyn based bands mentioned above.

All in all the show, like most others at Brillobox, did not disappoint. It’s a great place to go to hear new acts or to see possible future stars in a small venue which you can brag about when they get all big and famous. As Meatloaf once said “two out of three ain’t bad.” I guess that holds true for this show with one aberration, Jentzen, as the spoiled meat of the metaphorical sandwich. Ready Room shows great promise and Bear Hands proved they are worthy headliners at this venue and many more to come.
