Concert Review-Jo Dee Messina-Pittsburgh, PAJo Dee Messina brought her Music Room Series Tour to Pittsburgh on Saturday for an intimate show at the historic Carnegie Music Hall.  Messina, a former consistent #1 hit-maker in the late ‘90’s and early 00’s, has become a rarity in the touring circuit around the Pittsburgh area the past few years.  Other than her performance at post-game concert following a Pirates’ game last summer, Jo Dee hasn’t graced the area with her presence in what seems like an eternity.  Similarly, the absence of new music from the Boston, Massachusetts native, has unfortunately deterred some casual music fans from following her career.  Nevertheless, Jo Dee’s much acclaimed Music Room Series Tour on Saturday served as one of the more refreshing performances to hit the Pittsburgh area thus far in 2010.

Accompanied by a stage constructed to represent her music room at her home, Messina treated the merely half-packed theater to a unique selection of her greatest hits and personal favorites, as well as answering dozens of questions from an overzealous and bold-inquiring audience.  The evening included jokes, severely intoxicated women making nuisances of themselves, and even an outlandish teenaged fan who boldly danced on stage to one of biggest hits of the set,  who brought Jo Dee herself to laughter.

Messina shared that one of the main motivations for her Music Room Series Tour was to give her fans a better idea of who she is as a person, not just a performer.  The few hundred fortunate attendees of last night’s show saw Jo Dee as a comical, witty woman, while also displaying her intimate, sensitive side as a songwriter and performer.  Drawing similar elements of a songwriter’s series, she shared stories behind some of her biggest chart-toppers, including “Bring On The Rain” and “Burn,” as well as her latest release, “That’s God.” Concert Review-Jo Dee Messina-Pittsburgh, PA

During the course of her 120+ minute set, Messina made several references to the struggles she’s encountered over the past half-decade with her record label.  In the midst of treating the audience to a selection of tunes from of her still unreleased album, ‘Unmistakable,’ she displayed her obvious (and understandable) disgust with her situation.  While specifics of the issue are not appropriate, what is relevant is the talent of this under-rated songstress.  Tune after tune, Jo Dee proved that after a nearly 20 year career, she can still hit the notes and write the top-notch songs with the best of those in her genre.  Fan favorites of the evening, of course, included “That’s The Way It Is,” “Bye Bye,” and “I’m Alright.”

As of Saturday night, ‘Unmistakable' is set to be released in three segments, one in the spring, summer, and fall.  Because this will be her first release in six years, it’s difficult to say whether or not Messina will return to the popularity that she once enjoyed years ago.  It can’t be denied, though, that perhaps no one in the industry today deserves the stardom that Jo Dee Messina has received in the past, and should regain in the future.  A compelling woman with a one-of-a-kind personality and unprecedented musical talent, Messina represents everything that separates country music from the rest of the industry:  a true love for the music and for performing.
