Jo Dee Messina brought her Music Room Series Tour to Pittsburgh on Saturday for an intimate show at the historic Carnegie Music Hall. Messina, a former consistent #1 hit-maker in the late ‘90’s and early 00’s, has become a rarity in the touring circuit around the Pittsburgh area the past few years. Other than her performance at post-game concert following a Pirates’ game last summer, Jo Dee hasn’t graced the area with her presence in what seems like an eternity. Similarly, the absence of new music from the Boston, Massachusetts native, has unfortunately deterred some casual music fans from following her career. Nevertheless, Jo Dee’s much acclaimed Music Room Series Tour on Saturday served as one of the more refreshing performances to hit the Pittsburgh area thus far in 2010.
Accompanied by a stage constructed to represent her music room at her home, Messina treated the merely half-packed theater to a unique selection of her greatest hits and personal favorites, as well as answering dozens of questions from an overzealous and bold-inquiring audience. The evening included jokes, severely intoxicated women making nuisances of themselves, and even an outlandish teenaged fan who boldly danced on stage to one of biggest hits of the set, who brought Jo Dee herself to laughter.
Messina shared that one of the main motivations for her Music Room Series Tour was to give her fans a better idea of who she is as a person, not just a performer. The few hundred fortunate attendees of last night’s show saw Jo Dee as a comical, witty woman, while also displaying her intimate, sensitive side as a songwriter and performer.
