Concert Review-Lotus-Pittsburgh, PAOn Tuesday, December 29, Mr. Small’s Theater had the honor of helping Lotus kick off their New Year’s run. Lotus frequently visits Mr. Small’s, and the show sold out that night, leaving hundreds of disappointed, ticketless people to turn around and go home.

It was refreshing to see a regular Lotus show, considering the last time I saw them they were all dressed as David Bowie and played his songs for Halloween in Baltimore (a fabulous show, but a regular Lotus fix is needed now and again). However, it was definitely obvious that Lotus wasn’t wasting all of their energy on the opening night of their run. The first set opened with "Scrapple," from their 2009 album 'Oil on Glass/Feather on Wood.' Everyone there was more than prepared to dance all night to the funky, Nintendo-like music, and the typically overcrowded group at Small’s swayed from side to side from the second the first note hit.
The unfortunate thing about Mr. Small’s is that the over-21 crowd gets shunned to the back quarter of the theater, whileConcert Review-Lotus-Pittsburgh, PA the under-21s get to run rampant over the 75% in the front. It’s all the same ticket prices, but if you feel like having an adult beverage and dancing next to the stage, sorry about your luck

Lotus rounded out the first set with "Livingston Storm," "Molluskunk," and "Expired Slang." Without a doubt, the second set put the first one to shame, but Lotus still wasn’t giving it their full effect. The second set started with "Blender" and "128," then moved into an almost continuous flow of music starting with "Alkaline," into "It’s All Clear to Me Now," into "Hammerstrike." Then the band picked back up with "Age of Inexperience" (this one made a lot of people rejoice with happiness), into "Contagion," then back into "Age of Inexperience." The crowd was going crazy towards the end, with an intense energy combined with total exhaustion from the non-stop dancing.

Lotus ended in an encore of "In An Outline," which they managed to stretch on and on and on, and just when you thought they were done, they started back up again. Sometimes, the drawn-out, never endingness can be a real drag, but Lotus played it to perfection, possibly leaving the crowd wanting even more than they had when they first arrived.
