The Word-Andy FraserAs we entered the early stages of a new decade, the music industry is in a state that it has never been in before.  Digital music is dominating record sales, touring is the artists’ goldmine, and musical creativity is collectively at an all-time low.  Throughout the history of this one-of-a-kind industry, though, there are a few artists who have re-defined everything we, as a society, believe in musically.  These musicians utilize their talents in more ways than to merely entertain us superficially; they create music to make a difference.  This is the elite club in musical entertainment, and Andy Fraser, is perhaps its most deserving member.

Fraser, the original founding member of seminal group Free, has been one of the craftsmen of the blues-rock style that has influenced some of the top-notched names in the industry, most notably Led Zeppelin and Foreigner.  Unlike many other artists in the situation of developing a triumphant career as a member of a band, Andy has emerged as an astoundingly successful solo musician as well.  His latest effort, “This Is The Big One,” displays Fraser’s talent and passion with more essence than perhaps any other single piece of music.
The lead single from his forthcoming album, ‘On Assignment,’ addresses the issue of catastrophic climate change.  “This is something that was so unbelievable to me,” Fraser describes.  “When this first came to my attention, it stuck with me for the rest of the day.  The lyrics just poured out of me, and within days, the song was done.  It was a revelation.”  This musical revelation has garnered much well-deserved critical acclaim, and has brought the issue of global warming and dramatic climate alterations to the forefront, which is, of course, Fraser’s ultimate goal. “That’s what it’s all about!  It’s all about sparking change and making a difference.”

The social relevance and musical ingenuity of this song presents itself at a time of monotony and hollowed substance that has existed in recentThe Word-Andy Fraser releases for a number of years.  A monumental track such as “This Is The Big One” reaches out to the older generation of music fans, aiding them to reminisce to the days when music carried messages that entered the social consciousness and helped to spark change in the world.  “I think more than in any other industry, music has changed so much over the years,” Fraser shares.  “We’ve gone from music being all about personality, relevance and society, to a pretty face discovering a radio-friendly 3 chord piece that sells millions of copies.  It’s crazy.”

As motivating and mind-changing as the song has been, the accompanying video is even more powerful, adding a visual perspective to an already captivatingly descriptive lyrical journey.  Adding even more personality and deliverance to the production, Fraser was joined in the making of the video by his daughter, Hannah, as well as long-time friend and working-comrade Eric Donaldson, who served as producer on this tune, as well as numerous others in the past.  “We were all so comfortable with each The Word-Andy Fraser-Daughterother, tossing around ideas.  Eric and I have worked together on videos before, and so I trust his judgment.  He did a fantastic job, and the finished product is exactly how I imagined it would be.”

“This Is The Big One” tugs at the listeners’ heartstrings and opens their ears to a world outside their own, something ultimately unprecedented in this day and age.  Serving as the lead single of his forthcoming album, ‘On Assignment,’ the tune gives us a slim preview of what we can expect from Andy Fraser in his most recent catalogue of music.  “There are some personal pieces included, and there are also some works similar to this lead single.  It’s a prime representation of where I am in my life and where I feel the world is currently.  Some may like it, some may like me, and some may not.  And for those people…oh screw it.”  Now who can argue with a comment like that?

***‘On Assignment’ is scheduled for release this spring on his record label McTrax International.  In addition, Fraser’s long-awaited ‘Alive’ concert DVD documentary is one of the more anticipated releases and is sure to be a one-of-a-kind visual experience.  For the latest news on Andy Fraser, check out www.andyfraser.com and www.myspace.com/andyfraserbass.  To hear our exclusive interview with Andy in its entirety, click over to our Interviews page.***
