“We’re really proud of this album. It’s 100% us. We’ve worked really hard to make this debut the best that it can be, and we feel that it is the best reflection of us right now. We’re proud of it, and we can’t wait for the fans to hear it.” AJ Jacobs, founding member of Mutiny Within, believes in the talent and future of his band. When he speaks of his band’s future, he’s not hypothesizing IF they’re around in 10 years; he’s theorizing which album release they’ll be supporting in a decade. It’s this type of attitude and self-confidence that assures even the most speculative critic that Mutiny Within is not your typical metal band.
The band’s album represents 50 tracks over a two-year period, and despite the fact that this is, indeed a debut, M.I. have garnered an unprecedented amount of fans, enough to make their February 23rd release one of the most anticipated of the year so far. The New Jersey metal rock sextet, in addition to bassist A.J., also features his brother Brandon Jacobs (guitars), Chris Clancy (vocals), Bill Fore (drums), Drew Stavola (keyboards), and Danial Bage (guitars). If it’s ever possible to hear a band’s sense of unity and musical collaboration on a recorded piece, that is exactly the case with Mutiny Within’s self titled album.
The band’s debut video for their single, “Awake,” has garnered much-deserved attention from fans, critics, and even other artists. When A.J. is asked about this song, he doesn’t hesitate when he says, “when someone wants to know what Mutiny Within is all about, I don’t have to say anything. I just grab my MP3 player and put on “Awake.” That song defines us.” This is also the main reason why “Awake” is the first track on the band’s album, providing no mystery as to what Mutiny Within is all about. The song, as does the entire album, features that truly unique blend of hard beats, bludgeoning riffs, accompanied by soaring melodies and clean cut vocals. Similar to “Awake,” the album as a whole stretches the boundaries of metal and hard rock by offering the best of both genres, a rock-version of a crossover release, one that a fresh new take on one of the more under-appreciate genres in the music industry.
Mutiny Within is currently on tour through May on a full-fledged North American tour. Unfortunately, the closest the band makes it to Pittsburgh is Philadelphia, but as A.J. hints throughout our interview, following their headlining trek, they’re planning to jump on another tour immediately, whether it be their own tour or as a supporting act. Keep your fingers crossed for a M.I. date in our area, as this is one hard rock/metal act you don’t want to miss. For now, just remember to pick up their self titled debut on February 23…an album that, in a time where the music industry seems to produce generic imposters or manufactured portraits of artists, offers a fresh new perspective on a once predictable genre. Open up your mind, listen to the album, and join the rest of us fans of Mutiny Within.
