The Word-Carrie UnderwoodAs the 2010 American Idol competition reaches its final 10 contestants of the season, country music fans in Pittsburgh may have to wait for the next morning’s news to see who was voted off the show.  Carrie Underwood, the show’s winner in its fourth season, and arguably its most successful artist, brings her highly anticipated ‘Play On’ tour to the Petersen Events Center on April 1, along with special guests Craig Morgan and Sons of Sylvia.

Since her emergence onto the music scene, Underwood has transformed from the girl next door to a country-pop crossover superstar phenomenon.  Her music reaches everyone, from teenaged girls to middle aged men, and you can catch her tunes on every radio station from country to light rock to pop variety.  Her current trek is the first in a couple years, and proves to be the most highly-anticipated gigs of the year.

Carrie is hitting the road this spring in support of her third full length, disc, ‘Play On.’  The album certainly has a lot of live up to, following the releases of the seven times platinum debut ‘Some Hearts,’ as well as her sophomore effort, ‘Carnival Ride,’ which slated five number one hit singles.  After all, since her emergence on the music main stage, the Checotah, Oklahoma native has won multiple Grammy Awards, has been inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, is a three-time ACM and CMA Female Vocalist winner, and owns the crown of the fastest-selling debut country album in Nielsen SoundScan history.  Not bad for the girl next door…

‘Play On’ was released on November 3, 2009, and offers a mature variety of outlandish attitude-driven tunes alongside sentimental, sensitive ballads, a number of which were penned by Carrie herself.  In addition to the first two smash singles, “Cowboy Casanova” and “Temporary Home,” Underwood exhibits her ability to shine on all facets of the country music scale.  Her passion and pride bust through the speakers on the quirky sing-along numbers “Undo It” and “Songs Like This,” and her down-to-earth vulnerability is evident on “Mama’s Song” and “Someday When I Stop Loving You.”

Underwood’s show on April 1 promises to feature a slew of tunes from ‘Play On,’ as well as incorporating her top hits from the past, including “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” “Before He Cheats,” “All-American Girl,” and “Last Name.” While rumors are swirling about what we can expect from her show, one can’t deny that it will be one of the more entertaining spectacles of the year.  Ms. Underwood is at the top of list of artists in a genre that is loaded with class, and her performance, with the stage, her band, her vocals, and her fans, promises to be an evening to remember.
