The Word-STS9Over the course of the past ten-plus years STS9 has not so much created musical compositions as they have crafted atmospheres, different musical worlds, or at least ways to look at our world differently through music. This is perhaps most true of their most recent album ‘Ad Explorata,’ of which they are currently touring in support. According to STS9’s website the album is “inspired by the idea that there is always more to be discovered, manifested by the belief that you can always push towards the unknown and unexplored, and created by the will and desire for constant artistic evolution, expression and change.” And after listening to the twelve tracks that make up ‘Ad Explorata,’ it’s clear that the band did indeed accomplish what they set out to do. Even without prior knowledge of the intended theme, as it were, of the album one gets the feeling that the intention of this group of recordings is to push limits, move forward and put the listener in a beautiful trance, to take the listener somewhere unexplored, even if that place is only in their own head.
The members of STS9 -Hunter Brown, Jeffree Lerner, David Murphy, David Phipps and Zach Velmer – do this with a combination of what might be described as traditional rock instruments such as guitar, bass and acoustic drums as well as with instruments such as MIDI keyboards, laptops and handsonics more commonly found in the electronic genre of music STS9 is often lumped into. But categorizations like that should not be so willingly assigned to this band. A listen to even one of their pieces will typically give rise to comparison to jam bands and funk and jazz musicians alike, and that would only be a start. These specific types of music generally feature certain prerequisites, a few select scales are used, similar rhythmic patterns are relied on and then of course there’s the occasional solo meant to highlight the prowess of one member of any given band at a time. STS9 is by no means without the aforementioned features but neither do they depend on them. Take for instance “Atlas,” the first single from ‘Ad Explorata.’ Yes there is a somewhat funky drumbeat and there are musical themes that repeat and might be deemed a solo of sorts but they do not seem to be meant to stand out. They are just pieces of the whole gestalt. Motifs used as means to the end of a much larger picture, a picture that is meant to be heard a one unified thing and not the individual pieces of individual musicians.

The same can be said for “Looking Back on the Earth,” “Oil & Water,” or any other number on ‘Ad Explorata’ or anything found on their previous albums. It follows then that the live show must be an entirely different experience in itself. To hear a song on CD or as an MP3 is one thing but to see five musicians feeding off the energy of each other and that of the audience to weave together a new, unexplored musical realm for them and everyone involved is an entirely different experience. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to see STS9 live it is surely a trip –physically, musically and mentally - well worth taking.
